The BMW 5-series GT is dead. Long live the BMW 6-series GT! Yes, in BMW’s latest name rearrangement, the hunchbacked hatchback steps away from its saloon and Touring counterparts and strives to forge its own path.
While the current 6-series coupe is set to morph into the upcoming 8-series, BMW is keeping the 6-series nameplate alive with its four-door, five-seat hatch.
We’ll see it in the metal at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show and will go on sale in November priced from £46,810.
Still looks like Quasimodo to me
Yes, the shape hasn’t really changed, but BMW says the GT’s rear end has been lowered by 64mm to stop it looking so ungainly and overall ride height has dropped by 21mm. To accommodate more interior space, the 6-series GT is 87mm longer than before, too.
The facelift from the front looks very much like the fresh 5-series and the sleeker design means drag has been reduced. There’s a rear spoiler that lifts up at 75mph.
BMW’s new GT has also been on a diet; 115kg has been shaved off to help it be more efficient.
BMW 6-series GT engines and trim levels
- 630i – 2.0-litre 4cyl petrol, 254bhp, 43.4mpg
- 640i xDrive – 3.0-litre 6cyl petrol, 335bhp, 35.3mpg
- 630d – 3.0-litre 6cyl diesel, 261bhp, 57.6mpg
- 630d xDrive – 3.0-litre 6cyl diesel, 261bhp, 49.5mpg
There are only two trims: entry-level SE and M Sport.
Is it like a 5-series inside?
You betcha. The new GT is treated to the 5’s slick interior and can be equipped with a dizzying array of tech.
The massive iDrive system can be linked up with optional gesture control, a head-up display and a Bowers and Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound stereo if you so desire.
The usual list of assistance systems like lane departure warning, adaptive cruise, cross traffic warning and BMW’s Night Vision tech can be had, too.
How practical is it?
BMW says that rear space has improved; there are three full-size seats and headroom has apparently increased.
Boot space stands at 610 litres with the seats up (110 litres more than a 5-series saloon) and 1800 litres with the seats down.
When is the 6-series GT on sale?
After its reveal at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show, the new GT will hit UK dealers in November. It’s priced from £46,810 for an entry-level 630i SE.
